Essential oil bug repellent and bug bite treatments

In my initial post about the Young Living essential oil blend Purification, I realized that I left out two the major uses for this essential oil: bug repellent and treating bug bites!

I don’t know about your geographical area, but here it has been warm and damp with temperatures up into the 90’s already. What does that mean? Bugs! While we are generally very healthy and our immune systems are fairly strong, West Nile virus is still a concern. Mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus have been found in Richardson already this year. While I know we could treat the virus if we caught it, better to avoid getting bit altogether, if possible!

The Purification oil blend repels bugs because it contains these great bug repelling oils:

  • Citronella
  • Lemongrass
  • Rosemary
  • Melaleuca alternifolia
  • Lavandin
  • Myrtle

I actually make it even more potent by adding additional Lemongrass oil.

UPDATE: In the last few years I have also started adding Geranium essential oil for the mosquitoes in North Texas. I also now thin the oil mixture with witch hazel so that it sprays a finer and more absorbent mist, giving it the feel of traditional bug repellent sprays.

Essential Oil Bug repellant - Lemongrass and Purification oils

Here’s my recipe for Essential Oil Bug Repellent:

2 oz. organic olive oil

2 oz. witch hazel

20 drops Purification oil blend

20 drops Lemongrass oil

20 drops Geranium (optional, for North Texas mosquitoes)

I put it into a spray bottle and spray it onto our arms and legs. Make sure to use a glass or stainless steel spray bottle (affiliate link), because pure essential oils will interact with and degrade plastic. If you choose a glass bottle, keep it out of direct sunlight as much as possible, as sunlight can reduce the effectiveness of the oils. I like to just put mine in the shade under a chair or a towel when we’re using it outside.

What if I’ve already got a bug bite?

If you forgot to put on your bug repellent and you do get an itchy or burning bite, just rub a little Purification oil on it! It’s really neat how it soothes the itchiness, and I’m told that it is also working on healing the cause of the itch.

Remember, if you don’t have Purification, Lemongrass, or Geranium, you can buy them any time by visiting my online Young Living store. If you are local and want to tag on to my next Young Living order, shipping is free!
