In my initial post about the Young Living essential oil blend Purification, I realized that I left out two the major uses for this essential oil: bug repellent and treating bug bites!
I don’t know about your geographical area, but here it has been warm and damp with temperatures up into the 90’s already. What does that mean? Bugs! While we are generally very healthy and our immune systems are fairly strong, West Nile virus is still a concern. Mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus have been found in Richardson already this year. While I know we could treat the virus if we caught it, better to avoid getting bit altogether, if possible!
The Purification oil blend repels bugs because it contains these great bug repelling oils:
- Melaleuca alternifolia
I actually make it even more potent by adding additional Lemongrass oil.
Here’s my recipe for Essential Oil Bug Repellent:
2 oz. organic olive oil
2 oz. witch hazel
20 drops Purification oil blend
20 drops Lemongrass oil
I put it into a tiny spray bottle and spray it onto our arms and legs. UPDATED: I used to use just olive oil, but I found that a mix of olive and witch hazel produces a finer and more absorbent mix. Make sure to use a glass or stainless steel spray bottle, because pure essential oils will interact with and degrade plastic. If you choose a glass bottle, keep it out of direct sunlight as much as possible, as sunlight can reduce the effectiveness of the oils. I like to just put mine in the shade under a chair or a towel when we’re using it outside.
What if I’ve already got a bug bite?
If you forgot to put on your bug repellent and you do get an itchy or burning bite, just rub a little Purification oil on it! It’s really neat how it soothes the itchiness, and I’m told that it is also working on healing the cause of the itch.
Remember, if you don’t have Purification or Lemongrass, you can buy them any time by visiting my online Young Living store. If you are local and want to tag on to my next Young Living order, shipping is free!
